BOISDALE has a loud-and-proud Scottish identity with its tartan carpets and red walls.

It has a classy decor to attract the City Slickers with sculptures of a deer’s head on the wall, paintings by artists including Andy Warhol and even a 3D painting of a moving gondola boat.

There is also a live jazz band after 9pm which creates a lively atmosphere. Look out for star names with BBC TV presenter Jools Holland and sixties legend Sandie Shaw having performed there this year.

So it is little surprise the menu boasts dishes like caviar, smoked mackerel, Orkney soused herrings, Atlantic prawn cocktail and Ballotine
of guinea fowl and Yorkshire pigeon.

We began with the light starter of smoked salmon pieces with capers. A more filling and flavoursome starter is the hen egg served with
lettuce, salad cream and the impressive misolo sauce. For mains, I had the bulky and smoky cod fishcake, which was piping hot and served
with a drizzling of tartare sauce.

My partner went for the doversole, a generous portion but a tad fiddly to remove the bones.

The dover sole was complemented by the crunchy and well done
chunky chips.

For dessert, I went for the dark chocolate terrine, shaped as a pyramid containing a mouth-watering 70 per cent Valrhona cocoa and complemented by the white chocolate mousse.

My partner went for the equally rich and luxurious crème caramel oozing with chantilly cream and almond tuile (biscuits).
