The recent promotional tour of this week’s big Bollywood release All Is Well took an unexpected turn when it was revealed that actress Asin is on the verge of getting married to self-made millionaire Rahul Sharma.
Suddenly all the attention was taken away from the comedy-drama, which also stars Abhishek Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor, with the focus squarely on Asin’s love story.
After maintaining a stoic silence, Asin finally revealed last week the rumours were true. She likened her romance to her debut Bollywood film Ghajini, where her character unwittingly falls for a multi-millionaire.
Asin said she first met Rahul at a private airport in Mumbai and was introduced to him by Akshay Kumar, with whom she was travelling abroad for work. It was only later during the flight that Asin realised Rahul had organised everything.
“I realised that it was actually his flight, his tournament we were going for, he was sponsoring us and basically everything was happening because of him. He was very simple and down-to-earth and that stuck with me,” said Asin.
It was Akshay who suggested they would make a good match, she said.
“And then Akshay tells me the same day, ‘I think you two will be good for each other.’ I was like, ‘What? Where is this coming from?’ Akshay is a very good friend, one of my favourite co-stars and can joke with me, so I thought this one was also one of his random jokes,” she added.
“After our first meeting, we had spoken a few times over the phone and then Rahul was somehow convinced I was the girl for him. He asked me if he could meet my parents. We had just spoken two or three times, that too thanks to Akshay.”
Rahul met Asin’s parents and told them he wanted to marry their daughter. With their parents’ blessings, they decided to marry, Asin revealed.
“My relationship is not a secret, it’s just private. And there is a difference between what is a secret and what is private. Both of us are extremely low profile and we don’t like to flaunt anything, be it our relationship or anything else.”
Asin said she had been working in movies since the age of 14 and would take a break from acting post marriage.
That means All Is Well could be the last time you see her on the big screen for a while.
All Is Well is in cinemas now.
