TRADITIONAL: Madhuri Dixit and Salman Khan in the hit film
Bollywood star Madhuri Dixit believes her film Hum Aapke Hain Koun, which was released 21 years ago this month, continues to be loved by audiences because its story of sacrificing one’s love for family resonates even today.
“I am happy that people like to watch it even after 21 years. I think they love the film because it is true to what happens in Indian families. The story of Hum Aapke Hain Koun was very Indian,” Dixit said.
Hum Aap Ke Hain Koun hit screens on August 5 in 1994. Dixit and Salman Khan played the lead roles of Nisha and Prem, respectively, in the Sooraj Barjatya-directed movie.
The 48-year-old actress does not feel that the heroines in 1980s and 90s only did commercial films.
“It is not true that we did only commercial movies. Despite the many constrains of commercial cinema, I played challenging roles in movies like Prahar and Mrityudand.
“But it is true that there are many positive changes for women in cinema today. You see women in every department of filmmaking – be it direction, cinematography or lighting today. In our era, the only women to be seen on a movie set were either actresses or hair stylists,” she said.
