FIGHTING TALK: Amir Khan
Amir Khan has once again accused Floyd Mayweather of running scared ahead of his fight with Chris Algieri in New York on Friday night (29).
Khan claims the unbeaten American pound-for-pound great wants him to look bad against Algieri to duck out of a possible September date with the Bolton boxer.
“They are hoping I have a bad performance,” he said. “They are waiting for a bad fight from me, so they can turn round and say: ‘We knew you were not good enough’.
“Everyone they put to me, I’ve answered all the questions. I’ve beaten them in good fashion. They’re thinking Algieri has a style which doesn’t make people look good. They’re hoping he might cause me a few problems and make the fight look messy.
“That’s the way they are thinking because deep down they don’t want the fight.”
Mayweather maintains he will only fight once more in his 48-bout career after beating Manny Pacquiao this month. Khan had said Ramadan [the Muslim holy fasting month] would rule him out of a late summer date, but has since changed his mind.
The former two-time welterweight champ has promised he won’t let talk of Mayweather affect his performance this weekend.
“There’s talk of a Mayweather fight and others but I’m fully focused on this one. I’ve made the mistake of looking past opponents before and I’m not going to make that mistake again.
“I’m within touching distance of a big mega-fight but we have to get past this one first. Hopefully we can win in good fashion and I think the Mayweather fight will be there.”
Khan added: “Preparations have been going well. I’ve done 250 rounds of sparring for this fight so I’m more than ready.
“Algieri’s from New York and I’m sure that will motivate him to work hard. He’s in front of his own fans and that’s a boost for him.
“He’s a former world champion and has also been the distance with Manny Pacquiao and beaten some decent names too.”
