Suppliers from across the grocery trade met at the Wembley Hilton to celebrate the opening of Dhamecha’s eighth cash and carry depot.
For the first time in its 40-year history, the London-based cash and carry operation, the largest member of the Today’s Group, is opening a branch outside the capital.
The new 80,000sq ft depot in Leicester opened its doors for business last Friday (6).
The first Dhamecha Cash and Carry, based in Wembley, opened in 1976. The company now operates seven branches in and around the M25, with a customer base of over 10,000 independent grocery convenience stores. The group has a turnover of £700 million.
Speaking at the celebration, chief executive Pradip Dhamecha said: “Over the years we have built our business on the principles of first-class relationships with our customers, our suppliers and our staff.
“The Dhamecha Cash and Carry Group has a reputation of offering competitive, long-term pricing, excellent product availability, and regular, deep-cut promotions across our vast ranges of grocery, soft drinks, confectionery, beers, wines and spirits. We look forward to providing all of these things for the retailers in the East Midlands through our Leicester depot.”
Dhamecha continued: “The depot is a modern, purpose-built and environmentally-friendly construction. It will be run on the same principles as our other seven branches – in other words, open 364 days a year and operating a ‘strictly trade only’ policy.
“We are most impressed with the high standards of enthusiasm and commitment shown by our new 60-strong team. We are confident they will build on our reputation for providing an unequalled level of service to our customers.”
On its first day of trading, the Leicester depot offered deals on hundreds of branded products, celebrity appearances and served refreshments throughout the day.
In the four weeks from the date of the opening, Dhamecha will be running a daily raffle with prizes for its customers in Leicester. Dhamecha added: “Opening a cash and carry outside of London is a bold step for us. It’s fair to say everyone connected with the Dhamecha Group is very excited about the new venture.”
