RACISM ON RISE AFTER VOTE
REPORTS are coming in of Asians being targeted by far-right members of the Brexit lobby.
For example, one Twitter user, Heaven Crowley, a research professor in Coventry, wrote: “This evening my daughter left work in Birmingham and saw group of lads corner a Muslim girl shouting ‘Get out, we voted leave’. Awful times (sic).”
Shazia Awan, a Cardiff-based PR consultant born and raised in South Wales, revealed she had been the target of several Twitter trolls, telling her to “go home” since “the UK was never your country”.
Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, has quite rightly called in the Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe to deal with the rising incidence of hate crimes.
In order to represent the interests of all Londoners, Sadiq should be includ- ed in the team which negotiates Britain’s withdrawal terms with Brussels. Already there are calls for a second referendum.
It is unlikely the Brexit result is the end of the story.
