John Biggs is the new mayor of Tower Hamlets
Labour candidate John Biggs has been elected the new mayor of Tower Hamlets in east London following the removal of Lutfur Rahman from office two months ago.
Biggs lost last year to Rahman who was running as an independent and was forced to stand down after being convicted of electoral fraud in April.
The Labour mayor beat independent Rabina Khan who was being backed by disgraced Rahman, winning 32,754 votes including second preference nominations.
“What is important in Tower Hamlets is that we recognise the events of the past year or more have caused enormous tension and friction in our great borough and we need… to pull things back together again,” Biggs said last night at the count in London’s ExCel conference centre.
The Met is currently investigating 16 allegations of electoral malpractice in Tower Hamlets, following a fresh bout of allegations of wrongdoing concerning the campaign of mayoral candidate Rabina Khan.
