JAILED: Omair Zaman
A MAN has been jailed after he assaulted a pensioner in an unprovoked attack who later died from his injuries.
Andrew Pratt, 72, was walking home from his local pub along Bright Street, Stoke on May 28 when Omair Zaman walked up to him and punched him around the head and kicked him to the floor. Andrew was taken to hospital and was treated for serious injuries but died in hospital on August 8.
The 19-year-old from Coventry was initially charged with his murder but a plea of manslaughter was accepted and he was sentenced to three and a half years in prison at Leamington Justice Centre on Tuesday (15).
Detective Sergeant Michelle Kiedron, from CID, said: “Andrew was walking home from his local pub when Zaman punched and kicked him in an unprovoked attack.
“Neighbours came to Andrew’s aid and he was taken to hospital - he never left hospital again and died of his injuries a few months later.
“We accept the court’s decision and hope that the jailing of this dangerous man offers some comfort to Andrew’s family.”
