SUPPORT: Lord Dolar Popat
In May next year, Londoners will be asked to go to the polls again for local elections. We will be selecting our 25 local assembly members as well as choosing our new mayor. And the Conservative party are offering everyone on the electoral register a chance to select the right mayoral candidate to take our city forward.
For the past seven years, Boris Johnson has been an active, charismatic and successful mayor of London. While most people recognise his blonde ‘mop’ and his cheeky grin, not enough people recognise his excellent tenure as mayor. Crime has fallen, our Tube system has seen reinvigoration with sustained investment and the Olympic Games in 2012 showcased our city to the world.
But now the time has come to choose who should replace Boris. Four candidates have been put forward to represent the Conservative party – Richmond MP Zac Goldsmith; London MEP and leader of the Conservatives in Brussels Syed Kamall; current deputy mayor for police and crime Stephen Greenahalgh; and current London assembly member Andrew Boff.
It’s an extremely strong list and the candidates have been engaging in hustings and events across London. And it is up to you who will win the contest. This is an open primary, meaning anyone who lives in London and is on the electoral register can cast a vote on who the candidate should be. All you have to do is register online at conservatives.com/mayoroflondon
This is a unique opportunity and there are many different things to consider. All the candidates have set out positions on the big issues affecting our city, from housing and high-rise buildings through to transport and environmental policies.
t is easy to be cynical about politics. But decisions are made by those who turn up. This is an amazing opportunity for you to decide who offers the best plan for our city and it takes only a few seconds. The Conservative party wants the candidate who most impresses Londoners to be our choice in May’s election.
I have tremendous respect for all four of the candidates and have spent a lot of time analysing their plans for London. I would encourage you to do the same. Whoever you decide is the best candidate, I urge everyone to take the time to visit the website above and register their vote. The future of our city – the greatest city in the world – is too important to leave to other people.
